What’s even better about this project is that it produces fewer scraps and a small half-square triangle unit that you can use in other quilt projects in the future. Learn how to make this quilt block by watching the video tutorial below and show us your version of this project.

Materials for Double Disappearing 4-Patch Quilt Block:

  • 2 contrasting fabrics
  • Low-volume print background fabric
  • Marking pen, pencil, or chalk
  • Ruler
  • Scissors or rotary cutter and a cutting mat
  • Needle and thread
  • Iron, for pressing
  • Sewing machine

How to Make a Double Disappearing 4-Patch Quilt Block:

Step 1

Cut 2 contrasting fabrics into squares at 5 inches, then cut two background fabrics in the same size as well, and assemble them into a 4-patch block as shown in the video. Stitch them together by pair, then the pairs to each other, and press the seams nicely. Cut across at 1 inch from the center of each side, then rearrange the pieces as demonstrated in the video, and stitch them together.

Step 2

Measure the width of half a block, then cut a background square the same size as the measured width, and make 2. Align each square to opposite corners with their right sides facing together, draw a diagonal line from corner to corner, and add another line ¼ inch next to the first line. Stitch along the first line, then the next stitching should be ¼ inch away from the second line, and cut them apart along the remaining drawn line. Press the seams nicely, trim the excess, and square the block.
