Materials:

For a 24″ mini quilt:

  • 1 – 5″ stacker of a print collection
  • 1 – 5″ stacker of a solid color for the background
  • 1-yard backing fabric
  • 1/4 yard binding fabric

For a 64″ throw quilt:

  • 1 – 10″ stacker of a print collection
  • 1 – 10″ stacker of a solid color for the background
  • 4 yards of backing fabric
  • 2/3 yards binding fabric

Directions:

Step 1

First, select 16 different pairs of prints from your pack. Now, to make the blocks, you will need two prints and two background squares per block. For one of the print and background squares, you’re going to cut each of those into 4 & 1/2″ squares. For the remaining print and background squares, you’re going to place them right sides together, and on the back of the background square, you’re going to draw diagonal lines from corner to corner. Then, sew one-quarter of an inch on either side of those lines.

Step 2

Once you’ve sewn on either side of the lines, cut in 5″ vertically and horizontally right through the center. Finally, cut directly on the drawn diagonal lines. After all of these are cut, you will end up with eight half-square triangles. Press these and trim them to measure 4 & 1/2″ square. Lay out your eight half-square triangles, four background squares, and four print squares as shown in the image below. Sew these into four separate rows and then sew your rows together. As you sew these together, you will press toward the solid squares so you’ll press toward the background squares and then the print squares. Your seams will nest between your rows and once you’re sewing your rows together, press your seams open so that they will lay nice and flat. You will repeat this process to make a total of 16 blocks. Lay them out in four rows and four blocks each.
