This easy caprese salad recipe with balsamic glaze by Natashas Kitchen is one of the best salads you can make at home. It is so simple, yet full of flavors. The juiciness and sweetness of the tomatoes, the creaminess of the mozzarella, and the savoriness of the basil are perfect with the homemade balsamic vinegar and extra virgin olive oil.

This classic Italian recipe is very easy to make and will only take a few minutes to prepare. The homemade balsamic glaze only requires two ingredients  – high-quality balsamic vinegar and honey. The honey is optional; you can leave it out if you want. Do not forget the sea salt and freshly ground black pepper – they are perfect with the tomatoes.

You can serve this with steak, garlic bread, bolognese, or potato casserole.

 

Caprese Salad Ingredients

  • 3 to 4 medium ripe tomatoes (slice 1/4″ thick)
  • 12-16 oz of fresh mozzarella (sliced 1/4″ thick)
  • 1 bunch of fresh basil (1/3 cup)
  • sea salt and black pepper to taste
  • extra virgin olive oil
  • 2 tablespoons of balsamic glaze

For the balsamic glaze:

  • 1 cup of good balsamic vinegar
  • 1/2 tablespoon of honey (optional)

How to Make Caprese Salad and Balsamic Glaze

Step 1:

Make the balsamic glaze first. In a saucepan over heat, add the balsamic vinegar and honey. Bring it to a low boil. Once boiling, reduce the heat and let it simmer for about 12 to 15 minutes, stirring occasionally. It will thicken as it cools. Transfer to a jar and let it cool.

Step 2:

Prepare the tomatoes and mozzarella by slicing them into 1/4″ thick slices. Arrange the tomatoes on your platter, slightly overlapping each other. layer the cheese between each slice of tomato. Make sure you can see all the layers.

Step 3:

Tuck the basil leaves in between the layers or you can chop them and sprinkle.

Step 4:

Season with salt and pepper. Drizzle the extra virgin olive oil and the homemade balsamic vinegar. Serve and enjoy!
