Materials for Broken Wheel Quilt Block:

  • Light print fabric, for the center
  • Dark print fabric
  • Light contrasting fabric
  • Background fabric
  • Marking pen, pencil, or chalk
  • Ruler
  • Scissors or rotary cutter and a cutting mat
  • Needle and thread
  • Iron, for pressing
  • Sewing machine

How to Make a Broken Wheel Quilt Block:

Step 1

Cut the light print fabric for the corner into 4.5 inches, then cut 4 dark print fabrics into squares at 2.5 inches, and line the small squares at the back diagonally from corner to corner. Place one small square on the top corner of the larger square with their right sides facing, then put another square on the opposite bottom corner, and stitch them along the line. Cut ¼ inch away from the stitching line, press the seams toward the darker fabric, and repeat the same steps on the remaining empty corners. Make 3 more of this block unit for a total of 4.
