This quilt project idea by Teresa DownUnder on YouTube is very easy and simple to put together, so if you’re a beginner and you need a quilt tutorial that you can try, then this is the perfect project to get your hands on. What’s great about this quilt block is that you only need two different fabrics to make this, and the steps are pretty easy to follow, too.

Materials:

  • 2 squares @ 2⅜” x 2⅜” in Fabric A
  • 2 rectangles @ 2½” x 3½” in Fabric A
  • 2 squares @ 2⅜” x 2⅜” in Fabric B
  • 1 rectangle @ 4½” x 5½” in Fabric B
  • Marking pen, pencil, or chalk
  • Needle and thread
  • Ruler
  • Scissors or rotary cutter and a cutting mat
  • Sewing machine

Directions:

Step 1

Draw a diagonal line on the wrong side of the darker fabric square, then lay it on top of the background square so that their right sides are facing together, and pin them together in place. Sew the squares ¼ inch on each side of the drawn line, then cut them along the line, and press them open with the seams going toward the darker fabric. Trim the half-square triangles to 2½ inches, then lay the 2 rectangles on opposite sides as shown in the video, and sew them into 2 units making sure to lay them with their right sides facing.

Step 2

Press the units open, then sew them together, make a mark in the middle at 2¾ inches, make a cut almost to the stitching line, and press nicely. Align the corner and the seam intersection, then draw a line, and repeat on the other side. Lay the larger fabric piece on top with their right sides facing, then sew along the drawn lines, and cut ¼ inch away from the stitching line. Press them open, then trim off the excess fabric, and you’re done.
