During flu season, ice packs are important because you can use them to put on your forehead to let your fever subside. You can also use an ice pack as a cold compress for minor sprains and even some swelling caused by allergies and what not. But sometimes those store-bought ice bags leak. If you’re one of those who gets frustrated when your ice bag leaks, you actually have an option to make a homemade one yourself. The materials are cheap and can be found in your home. You don’t have to go to the store to buy them. Helpful DIY on Youtube shows us this simple trick to making a homemade ice pack that doesn’t leak.
Materials:
  • Sponge
  • Sealable bag
Directions:
All that you’ll need is a sponge and a sealable bag. If you don’t have a sealable bag, you can use a simple ziplock bag.

So the first step is to take the sponge and run it under water, allowing the sponge to soak up the water. Squeeze the sponge and release it underneath the water. This allows the water to get into the sponge rather than just on the sponge. So, just allow the sponge to soak up as much water as possible. Turn the water off and, as you can see, the sponge has soaked up water. It is dripping.
The next step is to take the sponge and put it into the sealable bag. Seal the bag and get out as much air as possible before completely sealing. The next step is to take this bag with the sponge in it and put it in the freezer. Let it sit in the freezer until the sponge is completely frozen. When frozen, take it out of the freezer. You will now have a homemade ice pack that you have created.

The cool thing about this homemade ice pack is that when it starts to thaw out, when the ice starts turning to water rather than getting in the bag and potentially leaking anywhere, the sponge will absorb the water as the ice melts. So it will not leak. It’s literally that simple.
