Materials:

For a 32″ x 40″ baby quilt:

  • 1 – 5″ charm pack
  • 3/4 yard background fabric
  • rotary cutter
  • ruler
  • rotating mat

Directions:

Step 1

To make the block, select two print squares and two background squares. Lay them out so that the print squares are on opposite corners and so are the background squares. Sew them together into two different rows, then sew the rows together to create a block. After sewing, flip it and sew it toward the print fabric. Now that your block is sewn together, you’re going to cut it to create the disappearing four-patch. The first thing you’ll do is get your ruler and cut 1″ on every side of the sewn seams. Now that all of your cuts are made, it’s time to create the magic of this block. Leave the four outside squares as they are, then turn the rectangle sections to 180 degrees as well as the tiny four-patch in the center. Once you have flipped all the center sections 180 degrees, it’s time to sew the block together.

Step 2

Sew into rows then sew the rows together to complete the block. After you sew the rows together for the wider rows, press toward the large squares, and in the center row, press in towards the tiny little four-patch. Once the rows are all sewn together, press out towards the wider rows. Now for laying them out, lay them facing the same direction but you could also lay out the blocks so that they rotate either every other block. When you do that, it creates little windows where the block background squares meet. The baby-size quilt will make a total of 20 blocks and you will lay them out in five rows and four blocks each.
