If you’re looking for your next quilt project, try making this diamond ring quilt pattern from Carol Thelen on Youtube! This may look complicated, but it’s pretty easy to do; you just have to follow the instructions carefully. It’s one of my favorite patterns as it looks so good with different colors or patterns. It’s also a great stash buster and would still look pretty, even in a scrappy version. You should definitely give this quilt a try, beginner or not. Watch the video tutorial below to learn the step by step instructions.

Materials:

  • 1/4 yard background
  • 1/8 yard accent fabric
  • (click here for the free pattern)

Directions:

Step 1

To start, cut all the fabric pieces needed for the quilt. For patch A, cut eight 1 1/2″ squares. For patch B, cut eight  1 1/2″ x 3″ rectangles. For patch C, cut sixteen 1 1/2″ half-square triangles (cut 2 3/8″ squares and cut them in half diagonally for two patches). For patch D, cut four 3″ finished quarter-square triangle (cut 4 1/4″ squares and cut them in half twice diagonally for four patches). For patch E, cut four 3″ finished half-square triangle (cut 3 7/8″ squares and cut them in half diagonally for two patches). And for patch F, cut four background and one accent 3″ finished square.

Step 2

Now, start laying out the quilt top. Piece one patch A, two patch Cs, and one patch E following the free pattern. Next, sew a patch B on top of the unit you just made, then sew the remaining patch A and patch B together vertically. After this, sew the two units you just made. Next, using patches Cs and Ds, make four flying geese units, then sew a patch F to that flying geese unit. Once you have all your units, refer to the free pattern to assemble the block.
