Start by preheating your oven to 350F.
Place a medium saucepan over medium heat and add the milk, butter, sugar, cinnamon, and salt. Stir occasionally until the butter is melted. Once melted, set aside and cool for about 10 minutes.
While waiting for the milk, lightly butter an 8-inch square baking dish, and add the bread cubes.
Once the milk mixture is slightly cooled, whisk in the eggs one at a time, then add the vanilla. Pour the mixture over the bread cubes. Let them sit for about 20 to 30 minutes to let the bread soak up the liquid.
Place inside the preheated oven and bake for 40 to 45 minutes or until golden brown on top and when a knife inserted in the center comes out clean.
Make the sauce. In a medium saucepan, combine the milk, cream, sugar, and butter and place over medium heat. Stir from time to time until the butter and sugar are melted and the mixture is steaming.
While waiting for the mixture, combine the cornstarch with 1/4 cup of water. Once the mixture is steaming, mix in the cornstarch slurry. Continuously stir until the mixture thickens. Remove the saucepan from heat and add the vanilla and salt if desired.
Pour the sauce over the freshly baked bread pudding. Serve and enjoy!
