Fabric crumbs are scraps from all of your previous sewing projects that are smaller than 2.5 inches but larger than 1 inch. Their size and shapes are often awkward that your immediate thought would be to just throw them away. But, you can actually still use them by creating a crumb quilt or strip that you can use in quilting, fabric blocks, borders, or even sashing. Just keep in mind that they are dense and heavier than regular fabric. Learn how to make them through this step-by-step tutorial by Just Get it Done Quilts on YouTube.

Materials:

  • Scrap fabrics
  • Thread
  • Sewing machine
  • Scissors or rotary cutter and mat
  • Ruler
  • Paper
  • Adding machine tape

Directions:

Step 1

Gather your scraps and start sorting them into two different piles, one should be the longer sizes and the other pile for the smaller ones. Now, beginning with the smaller piles, sew them together by pair, then set the seam, finger press, and iron press. After sewing, every pair of the smaller pile, sew them together to build your strip, then trim it off the size of 18 by 3 inches, and make a total of 6 strips so you can build an 18 by 18 inches block. Make sure to sew everything with a quarter-inch seam allowance.

Step 2

Next, start sewing the longer pile together in the same way that you did with the smaller pile. You can also use an adding-machine tape as a guide by putting it underneath the scraps, and sewing them together. The paper strip will help keep the fabric and frays in control, keep the strip stable, and make sewing the strip in the right size easier. To remove the paper after sewing, you can use any small and sharp object to pick it up even the smallest bits, but if you don’t want to go through all that trouble, then leave it because it will just go with the wash later.
