I know this part is a stumbling block for lots of people, too; that is why this binding with an easy invisible join tutorial from American Patchwork & Quilting on Youtube is a lifesaver. Materials:

  • your quilting project
  • ruler
  • pins
  • scissors

Directions:

Step 1

First, sew your binding all the way around and do your mitered corners. Now, you’re ready to do the invisible join at the end of the binding strip. Cut the binding two and a half inches wide so you have a length on each side that’s not sewn down. (You need that so that you’ve got the room to manipulate that binding a little bit.) Next, place the other unsewn length directly on top of the other, creating an overlap. Take a ruler, find the overlap, and go over two and a half inches. Once you’ve found it, take a pencil or any marking tool and mark it. Get your scissors and trim the excess binding right on the mark.

Step 2

Turn around your quilt, take the unsewn length, and put the right sides together, perpendicular to each other, on the two end pieces. (You mustn’t twist those pieces because you’re going to end up with a twisted binding piece.) After this, get a small ruler and draw a diagonal line where the two pieces meet. (This is the back or the wrong side.) Secure this with pins on each side, then take it to the sewing machine and sew it. After sewing, trim off the excess. Finger press the binding down or iron it. Now, go ahead and complete sewing the rest of that seam.
