Have a bunch of lovely craft notions and odds and ends you hate to throw away but no idea what to do with them? If you also have a blank canvas and some empty wall space, you are in luck. This incredible mixed media canvas is one of the prettiest projects I have seen lately. When I saw what it was made with and how easy it was to do, I was instantly sold on it. You will be, too! The supplies are all those scraps and craft notions from other projects. You know, the ones so pretty you could not throw them away or even give them away because they are so awesome. Get those out along with some Mod Podge, tissue paper and paper scraps, then craft away. You can add embellishments like doilies and pearl dots, too! Simply layer them and glue them down, creating a masterpiece as you go. I just love, love, love the idea of using old gift cards and tags, quotes, special things I want to remember as part of this canvas art. Dried flowers, old CD case cutouts, magazine photos you love, printed photos, maybe even some old buttons.Plane tickets, train tickets, concert ticket stubs, wedding invitations, love letters, mementos from babies birth, Christmas cards, playing cards, recipe cards….I could go on and on and on. Your creativity is your only limit. What an awesome gift this would be for your special someone if you put together a little memory canvas. Make one for yourself, too!
Mod Podge Matte
Canvas
Tissue Paper (can be specialty printed or just plain)
Craft notions – beads, buttons, coins, flat pearls
Doilies, gift tags or other mixed papers
Scrapbook Paper Scraps
Stamps and ink (optional)
On your blank canvas, first add some Mod Podge glue then add a layer of tissue paper. Press it down and let it dry for a few minutes. Then, add some torn paper over the layer of tissue paper, gluing it down as you go. There is no right or wrong way to go here, so you do not need to follow the example exactly as it is. Creativity is part of the fun of this project. You are using only pretty things, how can you go wrong? Just space them out and keep some basic elements between the ornate or detailed items for best effect.
Doilies! Add a romantic lacy flair to your artwork by gluing down one or more doilies. They will wrinkle a little bit but this is ok. Wrap them around the corners and fold under. Can you think of other cool paper textures to add? Try it! Also let me know in the comments what you think would be awesome for this craft project. We are about to make a few more of these.
Gift tags look great with this project, layer new ones or even use old ones. If you have a few sizes and colors, this is ideal. You can wrap the portions that go over the edge for a super look.
Find vintage inspiration anywhere and use it. I think old CD cases have some of the best artwork, and yet I simply no longer need them. My favorites are going on some wall art soon.
