This lovely quilt block is made up of only half-square triangles and 4-patch block units, and you can even make this with any combination of fabrics that you like. This quilt block would look great on a table topper, table runner, hanging quilt, or whatever quilt project you want to make.

Materials for State House Quilt Block:

  • Pink fabric
  • Gold fabric
  • Red fabric
  • Green fabric
  • Background fabric
  • Marking pen, pencil, or chalk
  • Ruler
  • Scissors or rotary cutter and a cutting mat
  • Fabric pins
  • Needle and thread
  • Iron, for pressing
  • Sewing machine

How to Make State House Quilt Block:

Step 1

Download and print the pattern, then cut the fabrics to size, and start making the half square triangles. Get the A and E squares, then stack them together with their right sides facing, and make sure to draw a diagonal line on the wrong side of the lighter fabric.

Step 2

Stitch on either side of the line with ¼ inch seam allowance, and cut them apart along the line. Press the seams towards the E triangle, then trim the units to a 4½-inch square, and make 2 of this set. Repeat the same steps with the B and E squares and make 4 of this set and 2 sets with the A and B squares.

Step 3

Next, stitch together the F and C squares beside each other, then make 8 of these, and sew them into 4-patch units following the arrangement shown in the pattern. Make 4 of this unit, then repeat with the D and F squares, and make 4 of this unit. Now, stitch the units into rows, then the rows to each other, make sure to refer to the pattern and press the seams as you go.
