For this recipe, you’ll need dried great northern beans, smoked ham hocks, salt, sugar, black pepper, and water. It’s totally customizable, so don’t hesitate to add more seasonings if you like. You can also use broth instead of water for extra flavor.

Place the two ham hocks and 1 pound of dried great northern beans in your crockpot. Turn the crockpot on high setting.
Add one teaspoon of salt, one teaspoon of sugar, and one-half teaspoon of black pepper.
Fill the crockpot with water to the top of the rim. Place the lid and cook the beans and ham hocks on high heat for 8 to 10 hours or overnight.
Once done cooking, take the lid off and remove the fat(optional) and bones from the ham hocks using two forks. Add more water and mix. Turn the heat to low and place the lid back. Cook for 2 hours more.
Serve with cornbread and enjoy!
