Boil 3/4 cup of water in a pot, then add 1 teaspoon of baking soda, 1 egg yolk, and 1/2 cup molasses. Mix until well combined.
In a large bowl, add 1 cup of flour, 1/2 cup of brown sugar, 1/8 teaspoon of ground cloves, 1/2 teaspoon of cinnamon, 1/8 teaspoon of nutmeg, 1/8 teaspoon of ginger, 1/2 teaspoon of salt, and 2 tablespoons of butter. Mix with your hands.
Pour the wet mixture into the pie shell, then sprinkle the dry mixture on top.
Place inside the oven and bake at 400F for 10 minutes, then at 325F for 30 minutes.
Once done baking, let it cool for a few minutes, before slicing.
