For the frosting:
Place a medium-sized saucepan over medium-low heat, and add brown sugar, butter, cream, milk, corn syrup, and salt. Mix to combine. Cook while stirring frequently until the butter is melted and the sugar has dissolved.
Turn the heat to medium and bring it to a full boil, while stirring constantly.
Once it reaches a full boil, set a timer for 44 minutes. Make sure to stir occasionally while it cooks. Alternatively, you can use a candy thermometer and cook until the sauce reaches 320F.
Turn off the heat and transfer to a large heatproof bowl. Allow it to cool completely before doing the next step.
In a large mixing bowl, add the softened butter and beat until smooth and creamy using an electric mixer. Turn the speed to low, then gradually add about half of the powdered sugar, mixing until combined. Next, drizzle in caramel and stir until well combined, then gradually add the remaining powdered sugar.
Stir in vanilla extract.
Spread the frosting or pipe over the cake or cupcakes. Sprinkle with fine sea salt if preferred.
