There are a lot of quilt block ideas that beginners can try that only require jelly roll strips, just like this whimsy quilt block by Carol Thelen on YouTube, and it comes with a free pattern, too. Learn how to make this block by reading the written instructions down below, and while you’re at it make sure to watch the video tutorial as well.
Step 1
Cut the fabrics to size as demonstrated in the video, then lay 1 print fabric at the center, and place 1 background on each side of the print fabric making sure the bottom edges are lined up. Now, lay the triangle on top of the print fabric with their right sides facing and bottom edges still matching, then stitch them together on the diagonal side with ¼ inch seam allowance, and repeat the same on the other side.

Step 2
Press the fabric open, then cut off the nubs, and continue to piece the remaining pieces into units as well. Get 2 units of the same print fabric, then place a background rectangle in between the units with the longer edges facing toward the center, and stitch them together one at a time. Press the seams as you go, then proceed to piece the rest of the pieces into the same block unit, once done, lay them out and assemble the blocks as shown in the diagram. Stitch the blocks together and press them as you go.
