Simple Side Step Quilt Tutorial

This simple side quilt from Sew Yeah on Youtube is one of my favorite quilt patterns, as it is so gorgeous and pleasing to the eyes. And even if it looks complex, it’s actually a beginner-friendly project! I remember when I was still in my beginner days, I badly wanna do this pattern the moment I saw it. I thought it was a cool pattern to make as a gift for my friends. Today, it is still one of my favorites, and now I just switch out different fabric patterns and colors whenever I do this. Materials:

• 1/2 yard binding
• 3 – 1/2 yards

Fabric A:

• layer cake – 1 pack of 42

Fabric B:

• background 1 5/8 yards

Directions:

Step 1

From fabric A, use five layer cake squares and cut them into five 7″ x 7″ squares, then cut those squares diagonally twice (for end triangles). 20 end triangles in total. 37 layer cake remains from fabric A and 28 are needed to complete the quilt. Cut fifty-five 4 – 1/2″ x 8 – 1/2″ rectangles. For fabric B background, cut five 8 – 1/2″ x WOF strips, then subcut forty-four 4 – 1/2″ x 8 – 1/2″ rectangles. Next, cut two 7″ x WOF strips, then subcut eight 7″ x 7″ squares and cut those squares diagonally twice for end triangle. This will total forty end triangles. Cut one 3 – 3/4″ x 4 – 3/4″ square strip with remaining fabric. Cut these diagonally once to make two corner triangles.

Step 2

Now, assemble the quilt. The quilt top will be sewn diagonally, so if you have space, it’s better to lay the pieces first so you can disperse the prints to your liking. (Use a 1/4″ seam allowance throughout). If you’re not too sure about your placement, you can refer to the free pattern for piece placement.
