DIY Cement Balloon Planter Tutorial

I wanted to try making my own planter, but I like it to be unique and rarely seen, so I searched for some inspiration on Youtube. While browsing, I found this beautiful cement planter from Artsy Pretty Plants. I really like how this one looks, so I immediately tried making my own, and I was not disappointed with the outcome. It’s pretty easy to make, and I bet you can also finish yours in less than a day. Watch the video tutorial below to learn the step-by-step instructions.
Materials:
- 7″ round balloons
- cement mix
- durable nitrile gloves
- old wire mesh strainer (with hooks)
- disposable plastic mixing bowl
- plastic grocery bag
- disposable measuring cup
- 3 pcs q-tips
- large sponge
- scissors
Directions:
Step 1
To start, inflate your balloon and set it aside. Next, mix up the cement in the disposable plastic mixing bowl (don’t forget to wear your gloves). Now, take the balloon, and place it on the sponge to keep it in place, then take your cement and start molding it around the balloon. (It’s important not to go past the halfway point, or the cement might crack while it’s curing.) Once you get to the half-point, feather the edges and taper them. Then, grab a Q-tip, dip it in water, and push lightly in the spots on the bottom to create drainage holes. After this, leave the balloon to allow the cement to cure for two hours.

Step 2
Now, mix up cement again for the second half and add it to the other side of the balloon. Smooth out the line between the cured and fresh cement, making sure you leave enough space for the opening. After this, let the second half cure for an hour. Once the cement has set, remove the balloon by popping it. Lastly, reinforce the planter with a thin layer of cement. Your DIY cement balloon planter is now finished!
