Materials:

  • cotton yarn (colors: hazelnut and faded denim)
  • 5.0mm crochet hook
  • yarn needle
  • scissors

Directions:

Step 1

Start with hazelnut to form the center of the flower coaster. Make a slip knot by placing the yarn over the palm of your hand, leaving at least around 4″ of yarn tail. Grab the top and wrap it around two fingers to form an X, then use your hook and go under one side of the X, then over the other side and pull the yarn through. After this, remove your fingers and tighten the knot. Next, chain four, then slip stitch into the first chain that you made to form a circle. Now, you have a ring to work around. First, chain two, then do twelve double crochets for the first round. Once you finished the 12 double crochets, slip stitch into the first double crochet that you made to close it, tightening it.

Step 2

For round two, chain two again, and put two double crochets into every single stitch around. Once done, you should end up with 24 double crochets. To close the second round, slip stitch into the first double crochet of this round, then tighten it. Now, grab your second color (faded denim), loop it onto your hook, and pull it through the other loop on the hook. Next, pull on the yarn of the first color to tighten it, then tug the tail of the second color to at least 4″.

Step 3

Now make the petals and since you have 24 stitches, you’ll have four stitches per petal. First, chain one, then do a single crochet in the same stitch you just slip stitched into. In the next stitch, do two double crochets twice, then for the fourth stitch, do a single crochet. Now, you have the start of your first petal. Repeat this pattern five more times to make a total of six petals. Once you finished, do a slip stitch into the first single crochet that you did this round. Now you have 36 stitches, so you’ll work over six stitches now instead of four.

Step 4

Now, chain one and start with a single crochet again, then do a double crochet into the next one followed by two double crochet to the next stitch, another two double crochet, then one double crochet in the next stitch. Stitch a single crochet to the next stitch, and a single crochet in the next stitch. This is the pattern for the second round of petals. Do it all the way around and you should end up with 48 stitches.

Step 5

For this round of petals, each petal is going to be worked over eight stitches. First, chain one, then do a single crochet, a double crochet, a double crochet, then two double crochet, another two double crochet, a double crochet, a double crochet, and a single crochet. Repeat this pattern around to finish the third round of petals. To fasten off, chain one, cut the yarn a few inches long, pull it through, and tighten it. Grab your yarn needle and start sewing the loose ends.
