Although some patterns allow you to use all of the fabric, most of the designs you see still produce a lot of scraps. But don’t worry – there are lots of ways to use them. Just don’t throw them right away! Here are 7 ways to use up your crumbs with Just Get it Done Quilts.
Start your sewing with a leader in place. They don’t need to be square or of the same size. This will help to support your fabric as it initially hits the feed dogs.
Make strips by sewing chains of crumbs together. You can use these strips in different blocks such as pick-up sticks or coin blocks.
Sew several crumb chains together to make crumb squares and crumb rectangles. Grow your block from all your crumbs, then use it as a block or fabric to cut another shape. When doing this, you can sew the crumbs to paper to secure the pieces.
Take any fusible webbing like steam-a-seam. You can add these crumbs to your blocks, use them as an applique on top of your quilting or make postcards out of them.
Cover your old cans or jars with your crumbs! Use 2 parts craft glue to 1 part water for this. It’s fast and easy and will only take a little time to dry.
Keep a pillowcase beside your sewing table and put all your crumbs and cutoffs there. You can make dog beds out of the crumbs for your local shelter or your dog!
Crumb chains, crumb blocks, and crumb applique can all be incorporated into an improv project. You can design it however you want without thinking of design rules. It’s super fun to make and let the left side of your brain rest.
