A nine-patch quilt block is one of the simplest patterns you can make at home, making it perfect for beginners. It doesn’t have any complicated steps, so anyone can follow it without difficulty. Missouri Star‘s tilted nine patch quilt is a little bit different from the basic block, but still beginner-friendly. Jenny Doan added some twists to it and was able to create this lovely design.

This design still requires you to make nine patch blocks. If you have made them before, the process will be easier for you. It is also a great way to use the nine-patch blocks you have at home. Easy Tilted Nine Patch Quilt Materials

  • 1 roll of 2 1/2″ print strips
  • 1 roll of 2 1/2″ background strips
  • 1 1/4 yards of border
  • 3/4 yard of binding
  • 4 1/2 yards of binding

How to Make Tilted Nine Patch Quilt

Step 1:

Get one print strip open it up and cut the selvage edge. Cut four pieces of 4 1/2″ x 2 1/2″ rectangles. Repeat with other print strips. Open the remainder of three strips and sew them together. Press the seams so they go out.

Step 2:

Cut the 3-unit strip into 2 1/2″ strips.

Step 3:

Pick three pieces from the strips, then sew them into a nine patch. Press it flat.

Step 4:

Take 27 of your background strips and cut into 2 1/2″ squares, then get 9 background strips and cut into 2 1/2″ x 4 1/2″ rectangles.

Step 5:

Fold the 2 1/2″ squares in half diagonally to make a crease. Get one of the rectangles and place a 2 1/2″ square on one end. Sew directly on the crease line. Trim 1/4″ away from the sewn line and repeat with the other end. Repeat the process with three more rectangles to make four flying geese.

Step 6:

On the left end of four flying geese, sew a 2 1/2″ square. Press them open. Get two of the flying geese with 2 1/2″ square and sew a 2 1/2″ x 4 1/2″ rectangle on the other end.

Step 7:

Arrange the pieces just like in the photo below, then sew them together to make a block.
