This tamale pie recipe hit a home run with my family on last night’s dinner table. When I found this tamale pie video recipe tutorial on Youtube, I really knew the family would love it because they love tamales. This pie is really a tamale casserole and filled with all the lovely ingredients of our beloved tamales, but it is a lot easier to make than tamales. The smell of this casserole is so amazing even my neighbors were enticed and they all started calling to find ou out what was in the oven.

Tamale Pie Ingredients:

  • 2 tablespoons oil
  • 1 pound lean ground beef
  • 1 beef bouillon cube
  • 1 1/2 to 2 tablespoons chili powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon dried ground cumin
  • 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • salt and freshly ground pepper (to taste)
  • 8 fluid ounces of water
  • 1 1/4 cup cheddar cheese (shredded)

Cornbread Mix:

  • 1 cup of yellow cornmeal
  • 1/2 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 tablespoon baking powder
  • 2 tablespoons sugar (pure cane sugar is best here)
  • 1/2 teaspoons of salt
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 tablespoon cooking oil
  • 1 (14 ounce) can of creamed corn
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 1 to 2 large jalapenos (diced, remove the seeds if you want it less hot)
  • 1/2 cup cheddar cheese (grated)
  • A buttered baking dish

Then, you make your jalapeno cheese cornbread batter and spreading it on the bottom of the casserole dish, then layering the meat and cheese. You will then, bake your tamale pie in a 400-degree oven for 20 to 25 minutes.
