The Day of the Dead sugar skulls have become really popular with all the plates, bowls and other items available to us right now, but she chose to take it a little further and use it as her costume this year!

This is such a fun costume and you can use your imagination with your wardrobe because the face paint and the head dress is the most important part to this outfit.

My daughter is doing this for Halloween and she’s wearing all black and using the sugar skull tutorial I’m providing below. She went to the Dollar Tree and bought roses and made a head dress and I can’t wait to see her tomorrow night!

She went to Sephora to see what would be best to use for the red around the eyes and they recommended red liquid lip color. The gal in this tutorial uses eyeshadow…whatever works for you!

I love all of the Mexican folk art, especially The Day of the Dead items that are for sale. It had to grow on me for a couple of years. I couldn’t get into anything with skulls on it, until this year and I love all of the colors that are used on the sugar skulls. There are some really beautifully painted ones.

The annual Mexican celebration, Day of the Dead, is a time when families gather to honor and remember deceased loved ones. It is believed that the souls of the dead return to visit the living families in homes, businesses and cemeteries. The Aztec honored their dead with fiestas and rituals during the harvest season.

They viewed death as the beginning of the cycle of seasons and life. Celebration usually begins October 31st and ends on November 2nd.
