When you look at this pattern by Missouri Star from a distance, you may think it’s hard to make, but it’s actually not! The blocks, when arranged together, form stairs in different directions and a diamond in the center. You might get confused when laying them down into a block, but if you follow the instructions step-by-step, it will be a breeze. It’s perfect for beginners as it only requires squares and rectangles. Learn how to make this sticks and stones quilt with Jenny Doan.
Take 2 pieces of 10 1/2″ rectangles and sew a white square at the end of each one with a quarter of an inch seam allowance. Once done, press them flat. The strips should measure 12 1/2″. Set these aside.
Take 1 from each of the 2 1/2″, 4 1/2″, 6 1/2″, and 8 1/2″ piles. Sew a white square at the end of each one with a quarter of an inch seam allowance. Press them flat with an iron.
Arrange the units from shortest to longest. Get 1 from each of the 2 1/2″, 4 1/2″, 6 1/2″, and 8 1/2″ piles and place them on strips you have sewn earlier to make 12 1/2″ units. Start with the longest to the shortest. See the picture below for reference. Sew each row with a quarter of an inch seam allowance.
Get 2 pieces of 12 1/2″ units from earlier, then place them on the top and bottom, so the squares form into a stair. Make sure to sew them with a quarter of an inch seam allowance to make the block. Press with an iron.
Make a total of 20 blocks. Arrange each block based on the quilt design, four on each row, for a total of 5 rows. Quilt and bind. Enjoy!
