Scrappy Split Stripe Quilt Block Tutorial

Are you looking for a way to discard your scrap fabrics? How about you turn them into these gorgeous scrappy split stripe quilt blocks from Tulip Square? It’s a fun and easy way to repurpose your scrap fabrics instead of just throwing them away.

The best part about this quilt block is that you can make it as scrappy as you like. You can combine solid and printed scraps, make it in differing sizes, and add bits of your favorite fabrics to make it more pretty. Materials:

Background color:

• two 7″ squares

All scraps:

• cut strips at least 7 1/2″ long, varying widths

Directions:

Step 1

To start, gather your fabric scraps and cut them at least 7 1/2″ long with varying widths (make sure you still have some room left for any trimming). Once done, sew all the strips together, making two sets. Then, press each set nicely. (The direction doesn’t matter, press whatever is easiest for you.)

Step 2

After pressing, trim each to 7″ squares. Next, take each background color and line them up nicely. Draw a line diagonally from corner to corner, then sew a 1/4″ seam on either side of that line. Repeat to the other square block. Once done, cut it in half right on the line, then press open. Now, take two blocks, one from each square you cut, place them on opposite sides, then place the remaining two on the other opposite sides, rotating them. (See photo below for the exact placement.) Sew these pieces together to complete the block.
