Don’t know what to do with your 3″ squares? Turn them into this quilted table topper! I saw this sewing project on The Melody of Sewing’s YouTube channel and instantly fell in love with it. It turned out absolutely beautiful, plus it’s perfect for any season. Change the colors to brown, green, and orange, and it will be great for fall. For the Christmas season, use red and green colors.

As mentioned earlier, this topper only needs 3-inch squares. It’s easy to make and not as hard as it may seem. The pattern starts with four patches that will make little hourglass blocks. Then, they are arranged together with solid squares to make a hashtag pattern. Sew several blocks together to make a table runner, or make the block smaller for a potholder. Watch the video below for the full instructions.
Start by making a four-patch using four colored squares. Sew them together in pairs first, then sew the two rows together. Repeat to make another one. Let’s call this four-patch 1.
For the next one, use two colored squares and two background squares, arranging them in alternating colors. Repeat to make two blocks. Let’s call this four-patch 2.
Set the seams and press them flat. Trim if needed.
Place one four-patch 1 and one four-patch 2 on top of each other, right sides together, then sew them all around the edges. Repeat with the two remaining blocks.
Cut each one diagonally in both directions from corner to corner. Set the seams and press each one open. Trim each one into a 3″ square.
Arrange the small blocks and the remaining colored and background squares just like in the photo below. Start by sewing them in rows. Set the seams and press each one flat. Next, sew the rows together to make the block. Set the seams and press it flat. Trim the sides if needed. It should be a 13-inch block
