Make the hourglasses. Cut 5″ squares from the background fabric. Get one background square and one printed square. Place them on top of each other and draw a diagonal line from corner to corner. Sew 1/4″ on either side of the line. Once done, cut directly on the line and press them open.
Lay your ruler on one of the half-square triangles, corner to corner across the two fabrics, and draw a line. Place it on top of the other half-square triangle but make sure you turn it so that the white nests up with the color. Sew 1/4″ on either side of the line. Cut directly on the line and press them open. Cut them into 4″ squares. Make the 2 packs of 5″ squares into hourglasses.
Using your third pack, make the center blocks. Cut them into 4″ squares, then cut 4″ squares on the background fabric too.
Assemble the blocks. Place the solid square in the center and one hourglass block on each side. Fill the corners with the 4″ background squares. Sew them in rows first with a 1/4″ seam allowance. Once done, sew the rows together, making sure the rows nest up. Press it flat, and you have an Ohio star.
For the sashing in between blocks, you need 2 1/2″ strips. Make sure to cut them the size of your block. For the cornerstones, you need 2 1/2″ squares.
