Take 5 of the colored squares and lay them out just like in the photo below. Next, fill the spaces with 4 pieces of background squares. Sew them in rows first with a 1/4″ seam allowance. Press the seams on the middle row towards the center and the seams on the first and third rows away from the center. Sew the three rows together. Make sure to match the corners. Repeat with the other squares.
Take your ruler, come in 2 1/2″ from the side and cut. Do the same on the opposite side. Next, rotate it so that the long side is facing you. Place your ruler 1/2″ from the short side and cut. Repeat to the opposite side. Now you have four strips and the middle block. Repeat the process with the other blocks.
Take the center square from one block and 2 long and 2 short strips from a different block. Arrange into a block just like in the photo below. Start to sew the short sides first with a 1/4″ seam allowance and press it flat. Next, match the seams on the long strips to the working block, and sew them. Press it flat and trim the excess.
Sew five rows four with four blocks each.
