For each block, you need 3 pieces of layer cake squares in contrasting colors and 1 piece of 10″ background square. You also need 4 pieces of 6 1/4″ background squares for the corners and 4 pieces of 7″ squares.
For the middle part of the block, get one layer of cake and one background square. Place them right sides together, then cut 1/2″ on two sides to turn them into 9 1/2″ squares. Sew all the way around with a 1/4″ seam allowance and cut diagonally in both directions. Open and press. Arrange the 4 half square triangles with the white in the center. Sew them in a four patch with a 1/4″ seam allowance and press it open.
Make the half-square triangles. Take the two 10″ layer cakes, place them right sides together, and cut them in half in both directions to get 5″ squares. Sew just the sides for each pair. Lay two sets on top of each other, making sure that the same colors are facing up. Cut each stack diagonally in opposite directions and press them open. Take your 7″ squares and cut diagonally. Lay the colored triangles on each of the white triangles and sew them with a 1/4″ seam allowance on the long side. Press them open and trim them into 6 1/4″ squares.
Assemble the blocks just like in the photo below. Sew the sets of twos together first, then sew the rows together. Make sure everything is lined up. Press it open and now you have the Missouri Star.
