The block starts with a rectangle that is snowballed on all corners, creating an octagon. After that, strip units are sewn on all sides to make a border. Here’s another beginner-friendly quilt project for you to try: Country Roads Quilt With Jenny Doan
Take your background fabric and cut a 5″ by 6″ rectangle, and four pieces of 2 1/2″ squares.
Take one jelly roll strip and cut 2 pieces of 5-inch units, 2 pieces of 10-inch units, and 4 pieces of 1 1/2″ units.
Stack the 1 1/2″ units and cut in the middle to make 1 1/2″ squares.
Recap: From your background, you need a 5″ by 6″ rectangle for the center and 4 pieces of 2 1/2″ squares. From your jelly roll strip, you need 2 pieces of 5″ units, 2 pieces of 10″ units, and 4 pieces of 1 1/2″ squares.
Take the centerpiece and place the 1 1/2″ squares on all corners. Snowball the corners by sewing diagonally from corner to corner. You can fold it in half diagonally to make a crease or draw a line. Once done, trim off the corners. Press it flat.
Take the two 5″ strips and sew them on the sides of the block with a 1/4″ seam allowance. Press it flat.
Place the 10″ strips on the long sides, top and bottom, and sew them in place.
Take the 2 1/2″ squares and press them in half diagonally to make a crease. Alternatively, you can draw a diagonal line from corner to corner. Place them on each corner of the block and sew directly on the lines. Trim the corners and press it flat.
