  • 1 box of Duncan Hines chocolate fudge cake mix
  • 1 cup of all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup of cocoa powder
  • 1 1/2 cups of cold coffee
  • 1/4 cup of vegetable oil
  • 1/2 cup of melted butter
  • 3 large eggs
  • 3/4 cup of sour cream
  • 1 cup of sugar
  • 1 teaspoon of salt
  • 1 tablespoon of vanilla extract

For the chocolate frosting:

  • 16 oz semi-sweet chocolate
  • 16 oz heavy whipping cream
  • 1/2 teaspoon of salt

 

How to Make a Chocolate Box Mix Taste Like Homemade

Step 1:

Start by preheating your oven to 335F and preparing two 8-inch round cake pans.

Step 2:

In the bowl of your stand mixer with the paddle attachment, add all the dry ingredients and mix to combine. Add the rest of the ingredients and mix on low speed for a minute.

Step 3:

Turn it off, and scrape the sides of the bowl. Turn it on again and mix on medium speed for two minutes.

Step 4:

Divide the batter equally into your cake pans and place in the preheated oven. Bake for 30 to 35 minutes until a toothpick comes out with a few sticky crumbs when inserted in the center. Once done baking, let it cool for a few minutes in the pan before removing and placing it on a cooling rack to cool completely.

Step 5:

Make the chocolate frosting. Add semi-sweet chocolate in a heat-proof bowl.

Place a medium pot over medium-high heat, then add heavy whipping cream, stirring occasionally to prevent burning. Once the steam is rising, remove it from the heat and pour over the chocolate. Let it sit for 5 minutes.

Add salt and whisk until smooth. Pour into a shallow dish and cover with plastic wrap. Let it cool to room temperature.

Step 6:

Frost the cake.
