Do you have old denim pants that you don’t plan on using anymore but can’t throw them out either? Well, I’ve been there before and surely a lot of other people, too! One thing you can do to them is to upcycle them and give them another useful purpose such as turning them into a pretty apron. If you want to learn how then all the steps that you need are in this video tutorial by sewingtimes on YouTube, you should try it out this week and see for yourself.

Materials:

  • Old denim pants
  • Fabric for the string
  • Scissors or rotary cutter and a cutting mat
  • Fabric pins
  • Needle and thread
  • Iron, for press
  • Sewing machine

Directions:

Step 1

Cut the legs of the pants, then turn them inside out, and cut them open through the seams at the side. Flip the leg in half lining up the seam nicely, then sew down the side of the upper leg to straighten it nicely, and trim off. Topstitch at the straightened seams, then lay the two leg fabric pieces with their right sides facing together, and sew down one side together. Open the apron, then mark 20-24cm or 7.8-9.4 inches at the center, and 23cm or 9 inches down the sides. Fold it over in half nicely, then connect the mark from the sides up to the top, and cut it off.

Step 2

Trim off the hem nicely, then zigzag stitch all the way around the apron, and set it aside. Grab the curved cutout pieces, then lay them together with their right sides facing, and sew them together straight down on the side. Trim the curve into a pocket shape as shown in the video, then give them a good press, and zigzag stitch all the way around. Fold the top of the pocket piece, then topstitch, and lay it on top of the apron. Fold the seams of the pocket in, then pin it around in place, and sew. Cut and sew the string pieces, then fold all the seams of the apron in, and sew. Lastly, sew the string into the apron and you’re done!
