Materials:

  • your quilt project
  • a big needle and thread

Directions:

Step 1

First, start with your sandwich (the backing, the batting, and the top with pins in them.) Next, get a long needle with a 4 ft long thread. Take note that you don’t have to put a knot on the end and you don’t want it to be even also. Start the stitch in the corner. (Put your hand underneath to make sure that your thread is not going to be seen on the back.) From outside, you come up, then pull your thread through (don’t pull it too fast because you want that to be just under the hole). After this, go down all the way through to the back (so your needle will poke through and you will feel it with your other hand) and then you’re going to come up through so that it will make the stitch visible on the back.

Step 2

Then, you will pull the thread through (this is where you want to feel the thread, hold onto it for this first stitch.) Next, you’ll come back to the beginning of your stitch, and then you’re going to go through your batting to your next stitch. So, you’re not going to want to be able to feel the thread on the backside. You’re going to go down, and through, and you can feel your finger guiding the needle underneath the fabric, and then you come up. (The fit of this thread is actually in between your layers of fabric, it’s in your batting.) Pull that tight and there you have a stitch. Repeat it by coming down and up. (Remember that you can feel the needle on the backside for this part because you went all the way through.) Now, you’re going to come back to the beginning, and then you’re going to go through the middle of your batting. (You don’t want to fill the spread on the backside of your quilt.)
