Step 1

Remove the source of the smell in your microwave as soon as you notice it, then quickly clean the inside with a damp cloth or sponge, and wipe off any crumbs or spills around the interior of your microwave.

Step 2

Wipe the ceiling of the microwave as well, then in a microwave-safe bowl, mix 1 cup of water, 3 tablespoons of white vinegar, and 1 tablespoon of vanilla extract, and microwave the solution for about 6 minutes.

Step 3

Allow the bowl to stand in the microwave for about 15 to 20 minutes to let the steam do its work. Remove the bowl with mitts, then dip a clean and fresh cloth in the remaining solution, and use it to wipe down the interior, top, and door of the microwave.

Step 4

Wash the plate with soap and water if needed, then if there’s still a smell lingering inside, pour about 1 to 2 cups of baking soda in a bowl, and shut it inside the microwave overnight to let it absorb the remaining odor.
