Whether you’re a foodie or someone who loves to cook, you must know how much herbs can improve the taste of the food by a notch, and you might even have a few favorite or more preferred ones. There are a lot of common herbs that are used in cooking and one of those is scallions or green onions, and the best thing about them is that they can last for a very long time in your fridge, and you can even regrow them for unlimited supply!

There are 4 simple methods that you try to preserve your store-bought scallions and they can last for at least a few weeks to months depending on the condition of the scallions when you first bought them. If taken care of properly, you can keep regrowing your scallions over and over again, and this is also a very convenient idea because out of all the methods, regrowing them ensures that the scallions you’re using are always fresh. Tip #1: In a Glass of Water
Wash the scallions well, then fill a glass with water at about 1½ inches high, and place the scallions. Cover them with a large Ziploc bag, then transfer the glass to the fridge, and store them for 2 to 4 weeks depending on the condition of your scallions when you first got them.
Tip #2: In Paper Towels and Ziploc Bags
Wash the scallions, then pat them dry, and cut them off to separate the green and white. Take 2 pieces of paper towels, then wrap a handful of the green part, and place them in a large Ziploc bag. Push as much air out of the bags and seal them, then do the same for the white part, and label the date on them. They can last 2 to 4 weeks depending on the condition of the scallions.
Tip #3: In the Freezer
Wash the scallions, then pat them dry, and separate the green and white. Chop the green and white parts, then put them in separate Ziploc bags, and label the date on each bag. Place the bags in the freezer and they will last for at least 3 months, when you use them put them directly on the dish you’re cooking, no need to thaw them. This method works best for cooked dishes, juice, and puree.
Tip #4: Grow them in a Potting Mix
Prepare a pot or can and make sure to drill holes for drainage if needed, then add the potting mix in it, and place the roots of the scallions. Water them daily and place them in a sunny place, then cut out the parts that you need to use, and the green parts will regrow again. They can last for a very long time, a few months at least.
