If you have a nice upholstery and like everything about it, except the color, this tutorial from Vintage Makeovers with Melanie on Youtube will solve your problem. It’s a quick and easy method of painting your upholstery and keeping it soft. Watch the video tutorial below to learn the steps.

Materials:

  • paint brush
  • spray bottle with water
  • sponge
  • gloves
  • some paint (of your choice)
  • liquid patina

Directions:

Step 1

Take a cup and combine hey sailor blue paint (or any brand), up about halfway full, and some water. Stir it up well. Next, get a spray bottle with water in it and spray it all over the fabric thoroughly (use your hand to rub it in to make sure all that fabric is wet.) Now, go ahead and start applying the paint using a brush. Make sure to paint it all over the fabric thoroughly. Rub the paint using your hands (with gloves) and a sponge. Repeat the process, spraying water, then applying the blue paint, until you’ve covered the entire fabric. (It’s easier to work in small sections because you want to make your fabric wet and you definitely don’t want it to dry out on you when you apply the paint.)

Step 2

After it dried, take your sponge again, and go back to any spaces where you felt rough and give it a bit of sanding to make it soft again. Next, it’s time to seal it. Combine a liquid patina and water (half and half) and mix it. After this, apply it in the same fashion, spraying water and then applying the liquid patina using a brush. Work in small sections again to make it easier. You can also paint the base of the upholstery and add some design while you’re at it.
