Materials:

  • 4-3½” terra cotta pots
  • 1-10½” terra cotta saucer
  • 1 large wood ball or 3″ smooth styrofoam ball
  • Hauser medium green and spring pasture paints
  • Black and white paints
  • E6000 adhesive
  • 1″ flat sponge
  • Scissors
  • Varnish or shellac, to protect the finish

Directions:

Get a damp towel, then wipe off the terra cotta pots and saucer so that the paint can stick better, and allow it to dry completely. Paint the outside of each pot as well as the bottom of the saucer and the entire styrofoam ball with medium green paint. Make two heavy coats on them as the terra cotta will soak the paint, then let it dry completely. Lay the pots with their bottom facing up, then apply E6000 around the rims, and lay the saucer above the pots with its bottom also facing up. Adjust the pots as needed until the turtle legs are even, then lightly press the saucer down to spread the glue, and let it dry completely. Paint the eyes of the turtle onto the painted styrofoam ball using black and white paint, then draw the eyelashes and mouth, and allow them to dry.

Step 2

Cut the sponge into a rectangle shape, then trim off the edges until it looks like a turtle shell. Soak the sponge in water to wet it, then wring it well, pour some spring green paint onto a disposable plate, and dip the wet sponge until covered with paint tapping off the excess. Apply medium green paint with a paintbrush along the edges of the sponge, then carefully stamp it on the saucer, reapply the paint as needed, and continue stamping until the saucer is covered with a turtle shell pattern. Once dry, allow it to dry, then glue the head of the turtle to the end of the saucer using E6000, and prop it in place until the glue dries completely. Cover the turtle with varnish or shellac if desired to protect the finish.
