Did you know you could make crispy battered fish without using beer? Yes, you can! I absolutely love this recipe by Tastefully Shay; It’s actually a family favorite. I couldn’t count how many times I’ve made this at home. Everybody loves it, even the kids.
If you are wondering why people add beer to the batter, it’s because it makes the crust crispy and light. I tried it once, and it was amazing too.

If you don’t like adding beer to your recipes like we do, you can use self-raising flour! It will give the same light and crispy batter that you are looking for. It will surely turn out delicious.
Serve it with rice, mashed potatoes, vegetables, mac and cheese, salad, french fries, or chips. For the dipping sauce, you can try sweet chili sauce, tartar sauce, or butter lemon sauce.

In a mixing bowl, combine self-raising flour, salt, garlic powder, and onion powder.
Add 1 egg and 1/2 cup of water. Whisk until well combined.
Fill a pan with a generous amount of cooking oil and place it over heat.
Once the oil is hot, dip your fish into the breading mixture and fully coat, then slowly drop it into the hot oil. Cook until golden brown on all sides. Once done, transfer to a plate lined with a paper towel. Continue cooking the remaining fish.
Serve with your preferred dipping sauce. Enjoy!
