Get two strips of contrasting fabric and lay them on top of each other, right sides together. Sew on the edge with a quarter of an inch seam allowance. Once done, set your seam and press to the dark side. Open it up.
Measure the width. They should measure 4 1/4″ if you sew a quarter of an inch. Get the 4 1/4″ strip and place it on top of the unit, right sides together. Sew on both sides with a quarter of an inch seam to make a tube. When you sew long seams like this, make sure to change directions often so that your fabric doesn’t bow.
Lay it on a flat surface. Place the ruler on the top of your strip. Align the 45-degree line on your top seam, then cut the diagonal. Next, slide your ruler down to the bottom with the 45-degree line aligned at the seam, then cut the diagonal. Repeat with the remaining tube.
Open them up and you have a square. Set the seams and press on the darker side. Take the four squares and arrange them together to make a double hourglass, set on point. Sew them together with a quarter of an inch seam allowance.
