If you haven’t seen the smoked watermelon that is taking the internet by storm, you are in for a treat. This smoked watermelon idea started at Duke’s Eatery in New York and looks like a ham. This watermelon idea is perfect to throw on the pit for your vegetarian or vegan friends and tastes delicious with all the traditional barbecue sides, such as coleslaw, beans, and baked potatoes. The end result is nothing short of amazing, the smoked watermelon develops a thick skin while it is being smoked for six to eight hours. When you pull this succulent smoked melon off the pit, you will score the top just like you would do to a ham. The top will need to be brushed with a little warm olive oil to replicate a glazed look.

Ingredients:

  • 1 heaping cup of table salt
  • 1 tablespoon of dried oregano
  • 2 tablespoons of cumin (also known as coriander)
  • Some fresh oregano
  • 1 tablespoon oakwood ash
  • 2 cups of hot water
  • 1/4 cup olive oil

Directions:

In this awesome tutorial by Stache Sauce on Youtube, you will learn how to make this smoked watermelon in a few easy steps. You start by making your brine and soaking the peeled watermelon in it for about three to four days. An ice chest works best for this step because you want to keep the temperature below 40 degrees, so you will need to add a little ice throughout the process.

Then, you will smoke the watermelon for six to eight hours.

This smoked watermelon is the greatest idea I have ever seen! I cannot wait to try it.
