Whenever I got hiccups as a child, people would tell me I must have stolen eggs. It was an old saying that I always heard growing up. But it was only now that I learned why we get hiccups. According to Dr. Oz, when your phrenic nerves, nerves that control your diaphragm, get irritated, you get hiccups. But it turns out that the nerve is super sensitive to carbon dioxide. These home remedies work by elevating the carbon dioxide in your blood. He stated that when your carbon dioxide is up, your body forces you to breathe, which stops the hiccups.
There are two ways to get rid of Hiccups according to Dr. Oz, breathing into a paper bag, and drinking water from a glass upside down.
Do not use a plastic bag. Open the paper lunch bag and place the opening on your mouth and nose. Hold both sides of the bag with your hands and close it a bit to make the opening smaller. Slowly breathe in and out. This will cause the bag to deflate and inflate. Stop doing it before you get lightheaded.
Fill a glass with water. Hold the glass and tilt your head down. Instead of drinking from the side near you, drink on the opposite side. Your chin may go inside the glass while drinking.
