Don’t start the season with crummy garden beds; edge them like a pro with this technique from Silver Cymbal on Youtube! You don’t have to hire a professional for this; you can edge yours using only a shovel with this technique – fast, super easy, and inexpensive. Watch the video tutorial below for the step-by-step instructions.
First of all, the best time to edge a bed is right after it rains out or when the ground is damp. Now, to edge your bed properly, it all comes down to technique. Put your foot on the right-hand side of the shovel as you’re waking it. Don’t put the shovel straight on, use the very corner of the shovel and balance your foot on it and walk in it along the bed. Doing this will give you a real advantage because that edge is razor-sharp and it’s putting all of your body weight on the shovel, and by walking it, you can do it much quicker.

With this technique, it will be a lot easier to edge, it’s faster, and you’ll get a much better result. But if you’re somebody that can’t balance really well, you don’t have to walk the shovel, you can still do the same technique. Just take your foot off and do each section separately. Now, after doing this, go back and just back-cut each of the pieces. One thing to be careful of is to never flip that grass up into your beds and leave it. Now, rake all of those bits of sod together and you’re good to go.
