Types of rice:

  • Long-grain white rice
  • Short-grain white rice
  • Brown rice

Bonus: Rice pilaf ingredients

  • 1 tbsp olive oil
  • 1 shallot, finely chopped
  • 1 cup white long-grain rice
  • 3 tbsp white wine
  • 1¾ cups chicken stock
  • A pinch of salt

Directions:

Step 1

To cook rice, it’s very important to keep the timing and the ratio right. For every 1 cup of long-grain white rice, add 2 cups of water, then for 1 cup of short-grain white rice, add 1¼ cups of water, and for 1 cup of brown rice, add 1¾ cups of water. One of the best ways to make sure that the rice comes out fluffy is to rinse them well before cooking, this helps remove all of the excess starch. Put the rice in a pot, then add the water and a pinch of salt (this is optional as it would only add some extra flavor), and bring it to a boil over high heat.

Step 2

Once boiling, give it a good stir, then put the lid back on, and turn the heat setting to the lowest to let the rice simmer. Long-grain white rice should simmer for 18 minutes, then short-grain white rice should simmer for 15 minutes, and brown rice for 45 minutes. Make sure to not remove the lid as it simmers, then once done simmering, turn off the heat, and let the rice steam with the lid on for an additional 5 to 10 minutes.

Place a pot on a stove over high heat, then add the olive oil, and let it heat up a bit before adding the shallots sauteeing them for about 30 seconds to 1 minute. Let them cook until nice and brown while stirring occasionally, then stir in the rice, and toast it for about 30 seconds before adding the wine. Give them a good stir until combined, then add the chicken stock and a pinch of salt, and bring them to a boil. Once boiling, put the lid on, then reduce the heat to a simmer, and let it cook for about 18 minutes. Turn off the heat, remove the pot, then let the rice steam for 10 more minutes, serve, and enjoy!
