Were you able to find the time to clean your can opener recently? Because you’re doing the arithmetic right now, it’s the dirtiest thing in your kitchen, at least according to scientific research. Because the wheel picks up food from the can and isn’t properly cleaned, an old-school can opener harbors diseases like salmonella and E. coli. Real Simple on Youtube teaches us how to clean your can opener with just a few materials.

Materials:

  • Dish soap
  • Bleach
  • Paper towels
  • Food-grade mineral oil

Directions:

Use hot water and dish soap to thoroughly clean your can opener after each use. To avoid rust, be sure to pat the surface dry completely with a cloth. Before putting it back in the drawer, leave the handles open so the wheels can air-dry completely.

Dish soap isn’t necessary for a thorough cleaning and disinfection of your can opener. Remove any remaining crud from the can opener’s wheels by turning the handle while the wheels are clamped to several layers of paper towel.
Pour in a gallon of boiling water and a tablespoon of bleach. To clean and soften any food that may be stuck to your can opener, spritz it with the mixture and let it sit for a few minutes. Rinse and thoroughly dry the can opener and wheels after wiping them down.

Apply food-grade mineral oil to a cloth or paper towel and lube the gears and wheels once the can opener has dried completely to help prevent rust.
