Get a microwave-safe container like a liquid measuring cup. Place your egg inside to measure how tall it is when laid flat. When he measured it, it showed 1 cup on the measuring cup.
Fill the cup with 1 1/2 cups of water, which allows a half inch over the egg when boiling in the microwave.
Add a heaping teaspoon of salt.
Place in the microwave.
For a hard-boiled egg, cook for 5 minutes.
For a soft-boiled egg, cook for only 4 to 5 minutes. If you want the yolk to be runnier, reduce the cooking time.
While waiting, fill a bowl with water and ice cubes.
Once the egg is done, wear kitchen mittens and remove the cup. Be careful as the water in the measuring cup is extremely hot.
For a hard-boiled egg, leave it in the water for 10 minutes before transferring it to an ice bath to shock the egg and prevent it further from cooking. Leave it for 10 to 15 minutes.
For a soft-boiled egg, remove it immediately from the hot water using a spoon and transfer it to the ice water bath to stop the cooking process.
