You only need a pack of 10″ print squares and 10″ background squares. The sewing process is not the same as making pinwheels. You won’t be making half-square triangles for this pattern; you’ll be using the snowball technique instead. It is simply placing a small square on top of a larger square or rectangle and sewing a diagonal line from corner to corner. Have fun sewing!
Choose 3 contrasting squares.
One of the squares will be your pinwheel. Cut it in half horizontally and vertically. Set aside.
Stack the two squares on top of each other. Cut them in half, rotate, then cut 1/2″ off the bottom.
Take 3 pieces of 10″ white squares and repeat step 1.
Take the colored squares and press them in half diagonally to make a crease line. Next, take two colored rectangles in different colors. Place one square on top of the colored rectangle, right sides together. Sew directly on the diagonal line. Repeat with the remaining squares and colored rectangles. Trim the excess for each one. Set the seam and press open.
Get one unit from step 3 and take a background rectangle. The long side of the triangle goes against your background rectangle. Sew with a 1/4″ seam allowance. Repeat with the remaining units. Press each one open.
Press the background squares in half diagonally. Place one square on top of one unit just like in the photo below and sew directly on the line. Trim excess. Set the seam and press open. Repeat with the remaining units and background squares.
Arrange the pieces just like in the photo below. A pinwheel should form in the center. Sew them together like a four-patch. Make 4 rows with 3 blocks each.
