1. Small drywall holes

Materials:

  • mud
  • putty knife (3 or 4 inches in width)

Instructions:

Take some mud using the putty knife and fill in the hole as best as you can. Be generous in pushing the mud into the hole to make sure it’s backfilled, then smoothen it out. Let it sit.

2. Fist-size drywall holes

First method – repair patch

Materials:

  • repair patch
  • blade
  • mud
  • putty knife

Instructions:

Clean the edges of the hole. Place the patch and smoothen it out as best as you can so there are no creases or wrinkles. Take some mud using your putty knife and push a lot into the area of the hole. Once filled in, cover the whole patch with mud.

Second method – presto patch

Materials:

  • presto patch
  • mud
  • putty knife
  • knife

Instructions:

Take the styrofoam that came with it as a template, and trace it with a pencil around the hole. Cut it out with a knife. Liberally apply mud all around the inside and outside of the circle. Push the presto patch in. Slide the putty knife from the center outward to make it as smooth as possible. Cover it with mud.

Third method – California patch

Materials:

  • patch
  • knife
  • putty knife
  • mud

Instructions:

Cut a square on the holes as big as it needs to be to get strong drywall all around it. Cut drywall that’s an inch and a half bigger on all sides than the square. Hold the piece right up to the wall and use a knife to score a line all the way down on the sides. Rotate and do the same on the other sides. Snap and peel everything except for the front paper. After that, do the same steps for the presto patch.

3. Large drywall holes

Materials:

  • scraps of wood
  • blade
  • screws
  • mud
  • putty knife

Instructions:

Cut a square around the hole. Cut two pieces of wood so they extend a couple of inches past the width of the hole on both sides. Screw them in place on top and bottom, then place the patch, screw again, and cover it with mud.

4. Massive drywall repair

Materials:

  • mesh tape
  • drywall
  • screws

Instructions:

Find the studs and mark them. Use a jab saw or drywall saw to cut from stud to stud, and along the inside of the studs. Come over about 3/4 of an inch half the thickness of the stud and use a knife to open the section up. Cover the square with drywall and fasten the screws in. Apply adhesive mesh tape around the edges. Try not to overlap them. Cover with mud.

Note: after the first coat of your method of choice, sand it until smooth while wearing safety goggles and a respirator. Apply the second coat and smoothen it. If it requires a third coat just repeat the process.
