You’ll have so much fun making this exploding block quilt by Missouri Star. As the name suggests, it is created by exploding the fabric, which means cutting it in the middle in an X shape to create this beautiful pattern. It’s easy to make and doesn’t require complicated processes. Watch the video below for full instructions.

Stack your layer cakes and cut a 4-inch strip and a 5-inch strip. Get the 5-inch strips and cut them into two pieces of 5-inch squares. Next, get the four-inch strips and cut into 4-inch squares. Do this for all layer cakes.
Get two of the 4-inch squares and place them right sides together. Sew all the way around with a 1/4″ seam allowance.
Draw a diagonal line from corner to corner in both directions. Pull the two fabrics apart then stick your scissors to the center of the top fabric and cut the lines you draw. Make sure not to cut through the other side. Use a scissor that has a sharp point to make the process easier. Iron it open.
Get the finished block and one 5-inch block and put them right sides together. Sew around the outside edge with a 1/4″ seam allowance.
Flip it to the 5″ square and draw a line from corner to corner again in both directions to make an X. Cut the lines again just like what you did in step 3. Make sure to cut just the top fabric and not the back fabric. Press it open again.
Repeat steps 2 to 5 for the other squares.
You need a total of 99 blocks to make the same quilt – eleven rows with nine blocks each. Sew them in rows first then sew them together to make the quilt. Add a 2 1/2″ inner border and a 5″ border.
