Step 1
Make sure there are no visible stains on the fabric and remove any finishes that could prevent the dye from penetrating. For a front-loading machine, wet the fabric in the sink, then put it in the machine.
Step 2
For a top loader, start the wash cycle and wait until the drum starts filling with water, then place the fabric, and make sure to put it in the highest setting.
Step 3
Let the cycle run for at least 30 minutes or longer, then pour the fabric dye into the machine if using a liquid, for powder dye, make sure to dissolve it in several cups of hot water first.
Step 4
For a front loader, add everything to the dispenser, and for a top loading machine, pour the dye around the drum after filling it with water.
Step 5
Add either a cup of salt or vinegar to your dye bath followed by a squirt of dish detergent, then for best results, apply fixative before the final rinse cycle, and run a rinse and spin cycle with cold water.
Step 6
Dry your fabric like normal and proceed to clean your washing machine by pouring some bleach into the internal dispenser, adding the detergent, and running a hot water cycle with a few old towels.
